Common Questions about D&D Groups:

  • Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a roleplaying game played by a group of people that want to tell a story together. Participants play as characters that go on adventures in a medieval fantasy setting. Unique to RPGs, there is no pre-determined path or spaces to hop along. Instead, players make choices that affect each part of the story.

A D&D Therapy Group combines traditional therapy with the immersive world of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). In each session, participants role-play as fantasy characters, facing challenges and quests that reflect real-life themes. Guided by an experienced therapist, you’ll explore your character’s journey while also gaining insights and skills that support your personal growth in the real world.

A D&D Therapy game is led by a therapist, often times called the Dungeon Master or Game Master (GM), that manages the world of the story. As the GM invites players to decide how their character want to interact with a given situation, dice rolls simulate the unpredictable outcomes when players take a risk. In success and failure, players work together as a story unfolds that challenges the heroes to overcome dangerous villains.

  • Not at all! D&D Therapy is for everyone, whether you’re new to the game or a seasoned player. Our therapists guide you through the basics, so no prior knowledge of D&D is necessary. The focus is on your experience, personal growth, and connecting with others in a safe, supportive environment.

  • D&D Therapy helps you build resilience, self-awareness, and coping skills in a unique way. By role-playing as a character, you can safely explore emotions, confront fears, and practice problem-solving. These sessions also foster a strong sense of community, helping you build connections and develop social skills, which are essential for mental well-being.

As life gets filled with more and more stress and disconnection, D&D Therapy Groups offer a way to slow down, connect with peers, and focus on play that lets us overcome challenges and ask big questions in a non-threatening environment. D&D Therapy Groups allow us to work on a variety of social and emotional goals in a way that is actually fun!

  • Each D&D Therapy Group includes 4-6 participants to keep the sessions personal and interactive. Once a group starts, it becomes a ‘closed group,’ meaning new members can’t join until a new group is formed. This setup helps foster a close-knit, supportive environment where everyone can connect and grow together. If a group is full or has already started, you can join our waitlist to secure your spot for the next available group!

  • In each session, you’ll engage in role-playing activities that align with therapeutic themes. Expect to set goals, participate in collaborative storytelling, and reflect on your experiences with the guidance of your therapist. Every session provides a balance of adventure, self-discovery, and group discussions to deepen your growth and support your mental health.

  • We know life happens! If you do need to miss a session, don’t worry - your spot in the group is still reserved, and you’re always welcome back the following week.

Regardless of attendance, you will still be responsible for the cost of each session. This is because when you join a therapy group, you’re committing to the full program. Each participant’s presence contributes to the group dynamic, and maintaining a consistent group is essential for everyone’s progress.

In social skills groups the players typically start with a 10-15 minute intro and reflection questions, followed by 70 minutes of game time and a 10-minute debrief out of character. The game is modified to present opportunities to work on each player’s areas of need, such as work on social communication, theory of mind, executive functioning, joint play skills, self-awareness, imagination, and emotional regulation. Each participant has individual goals that they develop with the game master.

A free consultation is required to help ensure that each participant is a good fit for this style of therapy group. During this call, Jonathan will learn more about you, your goals, and help you create a character and backstory that fits with those goals.

In counseling groups, there is a 15-minute check-in followed by 60 minutes of game time and then a 15-minute period after the game time of active discussion and reflection on what took place to help players understand themselves. Mental health themes can be explored in safety as well as learning and practicing methods for dealing with mental health, social interaction or identity concerns. This format of the group requires investment in actively considering one’s own role in the group, one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Each member is an integral part of the group process and storyline.
