Intake Sessions at Rally Point

For anyone considering counseling, one of the biggest decisions to make is which therapist you want to see. Most people aren’t familiar with how a therapist’s specialty, modality, and background affect the kind of counseling they receive - and making the wrong decision can result in a relationship that feels mismatched or ineffective.

At Rally Point, we believe that getting matched up with the right therapist is one of the most important elements of effective counseling - which is why all clients at Rally Point begin with a session led by one of our most experienced therapists.

During this initial session, they’ll learn about what you’re looking to get out of counseling, answer questions, and help you consider which therapists might be a good fit based on all the factors that make up your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions about Intake Sessions:

  • Intake sessions are a unique part of therapy at Rally Point - and focus on four areas that prepare clients for the best therapy experience.

During your intake session, one of our intake therapists will focus on:

    • Understanding the factors that make up your situation/why you are interested in counseling at this time

    • Helping you explore potential therapist options to find the right fit

    • Making sure your paperwork and billing setup is correct (based on your unique situation)

    • Answering questions and providing information about how therapy works at Rally Point.

  • In general, intake sessions are a time to get to know you and learn about the different factors that make up your situation.

During your session, your intake therapist will guide you through some common assessments, ask questions about what you want out of therapy, and give you plenty of time to ask questions.

In terms of preparation - nothing is required ahead of time. Thinking through questions like what you want out of therapy, or potential factors that our team may need to know about (like custody situations or upcoming life changes) can help us set you up for the best therapy experience.

  • If you are looking into therapy for more than one person, or are unsure about the best setup for therapy based on your situation, sometimes getting setup can feel complicated.

When you fill out our initial session form - you will be guided through questions that help us understand your situation and what type of setup may be best for your intake session.

  • That’s great! If you have a specific therapist in mind - this is something you can bring up and discuss during your intake session.

One of the main focus areas of intake sessions at Rally Point is to help understand your specific situation and then match you up with therapists in our practice who may be a good fit.

Some of the things that may be factors in considering which therapists could be a good fit are:

    • Specialty (specific degrees or training relevant to your situation)

    • Personality/Therapy Style (more or less directive)

    • Availability (whether or not a specific therapist has available time slots, and how many clients are on their waiting list)

  • This is common - and something you should bring up during your intake session if this is a concern going into therapy.

In general, good therapy is “client-focused” - meaning that therapists are trained to provide care based on the goals and values you bring into therapy - including elements of faith or cultural background.

We care about the things you care about - and during your intake session, our team will help you find the right fit based on all the factors that make up your situation.

  • Just like medial professionals, most therapists are trained and equipped to deal with a wide range of common situations (like a general provider) - but some types of situations require specific training or experience (like a specialist).

Some therapists at Rally Point may have the experience and training needed to provide these specific types of care, but sometimes a situation will fall outside of the scope of service our practice is qualified to provide.

During your intake session, our therapists will help you navigate questions like these - and if needed will provide referrals to trusted providers or practices nearby.
